Signs of Spring

Wendy spotted a wood duck in the black walnut tree this morning. We quite often see them this time of year. Erin says they are very private birds so we have never had them nest here. Maybe the wood duck is moving north to a little more 'natural' location?

"Are you looking at me?"

Erin's Victory Garden.

It's amazing how fast these arugula seeds have germinated and sprouted into little plants. The unseasonably warm March weather and quite a bit of sunshine has worked Nature's magic on her efforts to start a Victory Garden last week.

She brings them in every night and intends to start the garden plot after the danger of frost has passed in late May.

Lots Of Time Now To Work Around The House... Toro 13-38 Mower Fixed.

The steering on the Wheel Horse riding lawn mower has been skipping and making a grinding noise. Luckily I diagnosed the problems and ordered some new and used parts which we picked up at my box in USA last fall. The weather turned cold so I didn't get to doing the actual replacement.

The mower didn't fail and Tim managed to mulch up the fallen leaves but I don't think it will go much further before the steering gives up completely.

The teeth on the pinion and rack are damaged. This is likely caused by wear in the main bushing. Play in the shaft allows the pinion (small) gear to move away from the rack and puts great strain on the ends of the teeth.

Fortunately parts are readily available for the Toro 13-38 and I was able to find good ones on eBay. JOB FOR THIS WEEK: Just tear the machine down and install the pinion, rack and bushing, a little grease and we should be good for another ten years or more.

First, jack up the machine. Always us a jack stand when working under any elevated weight.

Above shows the old pinion gear and below  the 'new' and old rack gears.

It took about 20 years to get this bad. In future I'll keep the gears greased every season.

The 'new' pinion gear and steering shaft was too long.

ABOVE: I had to hack saw the shaft and drill a new hole the same distance from the gear.
BELOW: The 'new' pinion and rack gears installed, ready for a good slathering of grease.

This 'social distancing' because of the terrible COVID-19 virus is going to make it a long summer ahead if we can't go anywhere but maybe it will allow me to get a lot of items like this off my 'honey do' list. Next!

God Save the World!

A SCARY THOUGHT: The United States Constitution says that the Vice President of the United States is the person who will replace the President if the President is not able to continue.

The laws about succession (after the Vice President) were first created in 1792. The second in line, after the Vice President is the leader of the Senate. Mitch McConnell

The next in line is the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Nancy Pelosi!

Coronavirus This Week and Last Week... Deaths More Than Doubled!

We are in for some VERY tough times.

This Sunday (March 22) and last Sunday's (March 15) shocking figures. Deaths more than doubled and total cases nearly doubled in only ONE week. I don't even want to think about how this will end. God save the world!

Ever Wonder Why Your Outdoor Christmas Light Bulbs Fail?

Our black cat Benz often feels helpless to do anything about this mischievous squirrel. He taunts the poor kitty daily. Oh my! What is a cat to do?

Imagine the damage these little varmints can do to your car or boat wiring.

"Social Distancing" Sign On Our Front Door

Today we posted this sign:

The situation is quickly turning very serious. We are ready to hunker down and try to avoid outside contact if we can. I hope we'll look back and say we were just paranoid but it's definitely "life and death" for some people. Estimates project 100,000 deaths worldwide. Hopefully Canada can avoid the worst if we self isolate.

Getting Old Sucks

My 'Artsy' pic for today.

Our next door neighbour's arched trellis is failing.

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on
