AI Colourization, Woodward Ave, Detroit by Pesha

 I found an old postcard from around the turn of the last century and ran it through an AI colourizer.

What would have taken me hours to do, was accomplished in less than 10 seconds. I guess my skills in artsy colourization are now longer needed. Now I know what the typewriter repairman must have felt like.  I doubt anyone would have a compelling need to go to art school to learn graphic arts these days. Wow, that happened quick!

An Interesting Experiment

London Ontario on Dundas Street Looking east from Ontario Savings And Loans (now Canada Trust which was founded here)

On Ebay I found this old post card from the 1930's or 40's. It has obviously been coloured from a black and white photograph. The 'artist' probably never visited London and with limited technology and time came up with the rather ugly product shown above.

I brought it into Photoshop and stripped out the colour.

I then submitted it on line to My Heritage and their robot recoloured the pic.As you can see above, the result was better.

So I ran it through the AI a second time and tweaked it a bit in Photoshop. Wow, what a difference. The robot has never been here either, but it did a much better job.  Don't throw any of your old pictures away. No matter how bad they look now, technology is finding ways to restore them to where you originally intended them to be.

More Power To Erin's Hot Tub

Artificial Intelligence came up with these six frames when I typed in: "Wild hot tub party by Jeremy Mann".

Now to REALITY:

 In order to use the hot tub all winter it will be necessary to supply more energy to the heater so the water will stay hot and not freeze up. In order to do this we need to install a new, upgraded wire cable with heavy duty conductors and change the voltage from 120 v to 240 v.

To get the cable to the electrical panel in the basement I plan on drilling into the bricks in this location. I removed the storage box installed earlier to facilitate the wiring job.

I discovered that the black plastic pipe was an abandoned vent for a previous furnace.  There was a rag stuck in the end of the old pipe. What luck! that saves me from having to drill through the wall.

I could see where the old pipe went but couldn't tell whether it went straight outside or not because of some insulation hiding the view. I couldn't reach the insulation to see. The view below is through the floor joists and the finished basement ceiling on the bottom.

I joined two selfie sticks together with some duct tape and a chopstick to hold them straight, then I fastened a piece of coat hanger to the end so I could claw the insulation.

Using my rigged up selfie sticks I was able to snag and pull the insulation away so I could see. Great! the pipe goes straight through. What luck.

Should be a snap now to feed the wire through the old pipe.

Today Jake's friend Mike, who is a licensed electrician, dropped of 75 feet of cable with 6 ga. conductors in armour cable. All I have to do is feed the cable through the old pipe and leave 5 feet at the hot tub and the rest inside the furnace room at the end of the pipe. Mike will then come back on a day off and do the final connection. Stay tuned as I take more pictures of the final installation. Erin will notice a huge difference in the amount of heat soon available to keep the tub warm through even the coldest of winters.
