A Colouring Experiment

This is a picture taken June 19, 1922 in Washington, D.C. It is titled "Shelly & Jezebel." A National Photo Company Collection glass negative from the US Library of Congress.

My project today was to colourize the picture in Photoshop. I also cropped it down to feature the 'two stars hamming it up'.

A Panoramic Experiment

I was looking out the window at the beautiful snow and decided to try a panorama shot. I took two pictures, overlapping at the pool house and stitched them together using the "photomerge" feature found in Photoshop. The amazing thing is you can't even tell where the two pictures were joined together. Click on the picture to see the whole thing.

They were hand-held shots with no great care taken to ensure a correct alignment. Usually, if I am stitching two pictures together myself, I would at least mount the camera on a tripod and pan carefully. The computer program is so intuitive it can adjust for these incongruities and produce a perfect end result. It also adjusts the lighting so there is no seam.

Our son Tim suggested we do a 360 degree panorama from the roof-top. That's a great idea and I will do that but not today. There is a foot of snow on the roof peaks and this is the coldest day so far this year at -17 C.

Now There is a GREAT Idea!

Whisky in a Can Is The-Best-Thing-in-a-Can

The-Best-Thing-in-a Can Scottish Spirits, despite the name, is not a Scottish liquor company. It's based in Panama. But that's not important. What is important is that it sells whisky in a can. Real, straight whisky. 12 ounces of it. In a can.

Again, it's not scotch. That's okay. It's eight shots of whisky. In a can. For the first time ever.

No, it's not sold in the US or Canada. Not yet.

A Visit With A Good Friend

.
A picture of John at Marker 4 Restaurant in Venice FL back in 2008

My good friend John flew back to Canada on Sunday from the 'land of the dollar beer' and his condo in Florida. Linda stayed in Florida enjoying the 78 degree weather with her sister Sharon. John was here to attend a doctor's appointment and take care of other irksome details like bills etc. While he was in London for the appointment he dropped in for lunch at our house. I wish he had more time to talk but it was great to get some news from Fort Myers and 'shoot the breeze'. Cheers!

The NOB-HI Award for 2010 - Contender 4

The promoter of the Tobi Garment Steamer professes to deliver the answer to wrinkled cloths and claims "you'll never iron again". The jury is still out on that one but Wendy and our daughter Erin each got one for Christmas. I think Wendy was skeptical because she only opened the box last night at Erin's insistence.  Erin had been raving about the convenience and speed of attaining wrinkle free results and insisted on giving us a demonstration. She set it up in the living room and proceeded to show how the Tobi performs its magic 5X faster than ironing!.

NOB-HI Nominee
Wendy seemed impressed (no pun intended) but we'll have to see how much she actually uses this little hottie. I've added it to the list of NOB-HI (Number One Best - Household Item) contenders for 2010 but it has some stiff competition and I think it will be hard-pressed to take the top spot.

The NOB-HI Award for 2010 - Contender 3

NOB-HI Nominee
I've written about our new Ronco Showtime Pro 6000 Rotisserie but I can't say enough good things about it. The roasts, from chicken to prime rib to pork loins have all been fantastic. The meat is cooked to a golden outer crust and the inside remains juicy and tender. Ron is right - "Just set it and forget it". But I won't be forgetting it as a nominee for the new NOB-HI 2010 (Number One Best - Household Item) award.

The NOB-HI Award for 2010 - Contender 2

Number One? We'll See.
Wendy was quick to remind me about her Valentine's Day present of February 2010. She definitely nominates it for the NOB-HI trophy. As it is aptly described on toiletseatstyle:

A heated toilet seat is a luxury not considered seriously until you have the unfortunate experience of needing to go to the bathroom in the middle of a cold winters night.
The sudden shock of coming into contact with a cold seat can sometimes be startling enough to temporarily block your ability to go at all. Likewise, if you need to remain seated for any length of time, your body heat can be drained through the seat itself leaving you with an unpleasant experience.

The NOB-HI Award for 2010 - Contender 1

.
.
I haven't finalized which product I bought last year wins my Number One Best - Household Item  (NOB-HI) for 2010 but I have short-listed it down to include the Ninja Master Blender. These well made units feature a twin set of cutting blades driven by the blue power unit on top. The action of these extra blades works wonders at chopping and pulverizing ice cubes into a creamy smoothie. With its razor sharp blades it just keeps on smashing and slashing when other blenders grind to a halt. It works super fast at rendering our favorite frozen Margaritas.  Unlike a conventional blender, the motor and the blades come right out of the pitcher so cleanup is a snap. A smaller single serving unit comes with it.

The good news is I noticed that the Ninja is on sale at XSCargo for only $19.77 which moves it from a WATCH to a 'must have' BUY recommendation. I've seen these selling for $79.00. We were fortunate in finding three of these machines last summer at Macy's in Port Huron at a clearance price of $17.99. I gave one to Erin and kept one at the condo but I still need one for the boat so...

If you have an XSCargo store near you - run (don't walk) down there and snap one up. Here's their web site. http://www.shopxscargo.com/  Go to the search box and type in 'Ninja'.

NOB-HI Nominee
The Ninja is right up there with the Ron Popeil (Spray-on Hair) Rotisserie and my new Panasonic LX3 camera all of which I am extremely happy with, so I'll have to give it some more thought and post the winner later.  Who knows, maybe next year I'll be rating Spray-on Hair for the NOB-HI award!

Flashback 2004 - How did Wendy and I end up in Milan?

When most people think of Italy, they think of Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice or maybe Tuscany. Why Milan?  We had booked our first cruise which was leaving in a few days from Venice.  Using accumulated Air Miles reward miles, we could not get a flight into Venice so we picked the closest airport; Milan, which is a three hour train ride away.  I knew very little about Milano, a fashion center, a northern city, do tourists go there? Our starting city turned out to be a highlight of our entire trip. We were certainly not disappointed. This beautiful city has so much to offer visually that we very kept busy walking for the two days we were there. We covered many, but certainly not all the amazing sights of this remarkable city.

 Click map to enlarge

Since I didn't have a blog back in 2004, I'll post some Milano pictures now. Back then I had an Olympus C750, 4 mega-pixel with a 12x optical zoom, but no image stabilization. The camera had amazing clarity and featured a wireless remote shutter button, so I actually got in some of the shots. My daughter Erin used it for a couple years until I got her a Panasonic FX9. I plan to sell this good old Olympus camera on eBay in the coming weeks.

I snapped this picture as we entered the Fashion District. Of course I will never know who this dapper fellow is or where he is going, but he epitomized in my mind what an young Italian businessman in a fashion capital of the world might look like.

We could not just walk by our first real Italian deli.

I don't know what they sell here but it looks like it would be easy to melt away lots of money. I just peered through the window. See my reflection in the mirror? Click to enlarge.

Another mirror? I'm not going in there either. Nothing for me I'm sure. Who's Salvatore Ferragamo anyway? You don't think the dude behind the desk is ignoring me do you?

What is that red thing? Fancy place, not much inventory, no price tags... Oh oh! Let's go.

Celine, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, Armani? They were all there on one street.

In the distance loomed the most ornate and magnificent building I had ever set eyes on.

From a post card of the Duomo (Cathedral) in Milan. Click on it. You can get some appreciation of the magnitude of the huge church when you see the tiny people in the piazza in the foreground. To the left of the Duomo you can see the entrance to the "Galleria Vittorio Emanuele" Mall.

A wireless remote is a feature I miss on my newer cameras.

Doumo magnifico! The world's second largest church. Seats 40,000.

The "Galleria Vittorio Emanuele" remains Milan's most exclusive meeting-point.

A classy place indeed. What do we North Americans know about building shopping malls?

I took hundreds more pictures on our two day intensive walks around downtown Milano. This was just a teaser. If you love sightseeing and taking pictures you might decide to go there some time. I know you won't be disappointed.

Milan, Italy Flashback - Fixing Pictures with Photoshop

In my last post, in Santorini, I was talking about fixing up an image that may not have been too exciting and making it more 'dynamic'.Here is a Before and After of such a shot. It's all about HDR. (High Dynamic Range)

gif maker online
To make your own Animated GIFclick on the picture to go to the web page and follow the instructions.

The original picture was very lackluster and the archway was completely black so 50% of the picture had no information and the other 50% was very drab. I masked off the black arch and boosted it up.  See how much detail is hidden in those shadows?  Then I masked off the inner scene and tweaked it separately. Below is the finished picture. Click on the pic to enlarge it.

The picture was taken on a dull day in May of 2004 and shows the view as we leave through the main entrance to the Castello Sforzesco in Milan Italy.  It would have looked better with a blue sky but we can't change the weather.

...Or can we? Wow! Looks like one of those old, colourized postcards from the turn of the last century.  With my phony sunshine you can even see more shadow detail in the walkway. I take lots of pictures and I don't erase them. You never know when the technology will come along to fix them. Milan is a long way away and I might not ever get back to take another. Still, I've got the original and if I want, I can try something else. Have some fun with Photoshop or if you'd like to, use the excellent program Pixlr.com. Nothing to download  and it's FREE. Experiment with the 'mimic HDR' filter. (read about High Dynamic Range)

The Donkey Taxis of Santorini Greece

I was cruising the internet when I came across an article about the Donkey Taxis of Santorini. It caught my eye because I remember them very well from our first cruise back in in 2004 when we visited Santorini on the Westerdam.

Below is my "Artsy Pic" about the Donkey Taxi Drivers that work the side of a cliff in Santorini Greece. There is a funicular (cable car) but the tourists like to ride these donkeys up the hundreds of stairs to the town of Fira (Thira) at the top. Wendy and I thought it was quite disgusting and opted to take the funicular.  I've nothing against 'beasts of burden' performing their age-old tasks, but when they are over-loaded, over worked and improperly cared for and groomed, then I guess something has to be done to mitigate their exploitation.  I discovered today that there is a movement to bring some sort of control to the cruel mistreatment.

Click on my "Artsy Pic" to enlarge it.

I took a picture of the drivers when I was there and today made it into an art piece. Thought you might like to see the before and after and read about the Donkey Sanctuary in England.

Picture taken May 11, 2004

As you can see, the original picture was out of focus and the men didn't really have any money in their hands. I "Photoshopped'' the American cash. I love how the lines of sunshine coming through the overhead canopy cast the lines on to the blue denim shirt, (as well as the man with the wallet in back and the floor) making a sinister prisoner-stripe and caged look which is repeated in the black and yellow shirt. The heavy 'brush strokes' I selected also give a tough guy look to the men's faces. Don't throw any of your pictures away! Even seemingly bad, out of focus shots might be able to be fixed up with Photoshop.

Stop the abuse of Donkey Taxis in Santorini

Santorini Campaign: Cruelly pulling a donkey's tail
The Donkey Sanctuary condemns the Municipality of Santorini because of mistreatment of donkey taxis.
In the blistering heat this summer on the Greek Island of Santorini, thousands of tourists will unload from vast cruise ships and be ferried ashore to a port which leads to the small town of Thira. The options of getting to the town located high above the port are either by cable car or donkey taxi, but because the cable car is quickly flooded by the tourists, a queue quickly builds for the donkeys and mules.
Over 200 of them have been tied up in the hot sun for hours waiting for the first of the tourists to arrive. There is a shelter and water available a little way up the steps (which lead up to Thira) but the owners choose not to rest the animals at this location as it’s not convenient for them.
Santorini Campaign: Donkey taxi owners hitting their animals
Instead they gather all the donkeys and mules in the loading area at the bottom of the steps, which means that any tourist wanting to walk up to the town must first try and pass the animals, who themselves do not have enough room to stand properly and are burdened with heavy harness equipment.
The owners have been seen by our investigators hitting their donkeys and mules with sticks and berating them if they do not react quickly enough, which causes panic amongst the animals and general chaos.
The tourists using the taxis mount the donkeys/mules and start the exhausting journey up hundreds of steps to Thira. Any person, large or small, is allowed by the owners to ride the animals and unfortunately the small donkeys often carry the biggest load because larger people tend to find it difficult to climb onto the mules because they are much taller.
Santorini Campaign: Two holiday makers astride a mule
Once at the top, the donkeys are unloaded and either carry returning tourists to the port or they are hurried down the steps again.
Sometimes many ships can arrive in one day meaning thousands of tourists need transporting up to Thira. A donkey taxi’s work day can last from 9am until as late as 7pm and those owners who are more assertive will force their donkeys to the front of the queue causing their donkeys to work almost continually all day.
After working for many years with the Municipality of Santorini and the donkey owners themselves, The Donkey Sanctuary is sad to announce that because of their continued lack of effort to improve working conditions for the donkey taxis, we can no longer support them.
Santorini Campaign: Plastic hose pipe causing deep girth sore
Having helped the Municipality to set up a code of practice which governed the use of the donkeys on Santorini and providing the owners with free veterinary care and advice for their animals, we recently discovered that the whole operation was a sham and that the procedures were only being adhered to when we were visiting the island! This tied in with reports from tourists who gave a completely different account to the situation we were being shown during our visits.
As if this was not enough the Municipality has tried to get us involved with a "refuge" they have set up for abandoned donkeys on the island. After advising them that they should not start a refuge until they had the correct facilities and infrastructure to look after the animals properly, they went ahead anyway and moved animals in (from where we do not know).
Our investigations of these donkey taxis and the “refuge” have raised serious questions over the welfare of the donkey taxis, and the intentions of the Municipality to get us involved. Therefore, based on the circumstances we have outlined in this report, we will not support them as is not going to resolve the welfare problems in Santorini long term.
Santorini Campaign: Deep girth sores
Unless the Municipality and the donkey owners make major improvements to the working conditions for the donkey taxis and their terrible refuge, we plan to escalate this major campaign further.
We will publicise the problems facing the donkeys, including writing to the cruise ship companies asking them to give all their passengers Donkey Sanctuary leaflets about the donkey taxis and why they should not use them. We will contact newspapers, TV and radio asking them to highlight the problems in Santorini.
We will also be starting an email campaign to the Mayor of the Island, Mr Aggelos Roussos, demanding that he takes the welfare of these animals seriously. We will ask him to accept our recommendations, which are to:
  • Progress plans to build a second cable car to save the donkey taxis from this terrible situation
  • Improve and enforce The Donkey Sanctuary’s code of practice for donkey taxis
  • Ensure that the donkeys are properly licensed and receive veterinary inspections ensuring they are fit to work
  • Ensure that the shelters and welfare facilities that are already in place are used by the owners
  • Build further facilities at the top of the steps utilisting money promised by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou of Easy Jet over a year ago
  • Work with The Donkey Sanctuary and the local welfare group to improve conditions for the donkey taxis
  • Provide proper facilities and care for the donkeys in the “refuge”
The largest part of our campaign comes down to all of you, our loyal supporters. If we are to get the Municipality of Santorini to change their ways, we must discourage tourists from using the donkey taxis. Santorini relies on tourism to be successful and if tourists stop going because of the animal welfare issues, maybe then the Municipality and the donkey owners will realise they need to act on their words.

Rei Dos Leitoes - The King of Pigs

.

Wendy and I decided to try a 'different' restaurant for lunch today. I had heard about this place and looked it up on the internet. The literal translation is The King of Sucking Pigs. It is located in the Portuguese area of our city. The menu specials are shown here:

Rei Dos Leitoes Daily Specials
Monday - baby back ribs
Tuesday - cod fish casserole and grilled octopus
Wednesday - grilled cod fish
Thursday - Brazilian style steak and bean stew
Friday - Roasted Goat Stew
Saturday - Roasted suckling pig

The Roasted Goat Stew turned out of the translation from Portuguese to be Stewed, Roasted Goat. Either one would be excellent I'm sure. I had mine with a Coor's Lite. The place is in no way pretentious or formal with its paper place-mats but it was so crowded, we sat with two gentlemen at a table for four. They graciously shared their table.

I lifted the picture above and below from another blog. Feel free to visit 'The Black Pig BBQ' as he writes an excellent review about this place a few years ago

Every Saturday they roast the pigs in a traditional domed, brick oven pit. Ouch! That's gotta hurt.

We can't wait to get back here again to try some of the other specialties. In spite of the restaurant's name, chicken is apparently the most popular menu item.

Next door is a fish market and all around this section of town are interesting family owned businesses and eateries. Next time you come to visit Wendy and I, we'll head down here for lunch. Click here to go to the King of Pigs web site.
