"Un-Named" Memories From New Toronto Secondary School.

Long before Loblaws had NO NAME, we had "Un-Named".

Left to Right: Tim, Ray, Vince (back of head), Dave (Davo), Ed, and Max.

Wendy was doing some spring cleaning in the basement and came across this old sign that used to be on the front of the base drum in our band back in the early to mid sixties. Max's brother-in-law was a sign painter and he made it for us.

I sent an image of the drum sign to my old friend Ed and he returned a grainy pic from our old high school yearbook "The Neutron". I colourized it and fixed it up a bit. Probably the only picture in existence of my old group.

UPDATE Aug 27, 2022: I brought the old picture into Photoshop and cropped out each face. I then fed it into an Artificial Intelligence 'face enhancer' and re-did the pic. Quite amazing don't you think?

Click on the picture to view the 'repaired' faces. Of course nothing we have yet can magically return a bad photo perfectly, but this enhancement certainly went a long way from the grainy old Neutron Yearbook photo above.

Who Would Believe It Snowed Earlier This Week?

Our pool is not open yet, but Erin's is:

The advantage of a small pool is rapid heating once it's open.

Hot tub 102F

Less than a week ago we got four inches of snow.  "That's April for ya."

Kristine Sent Another Picture For Me

This picture is Kristine's other grandfather, on her father Bill's side, Watson. My old friend David is one of the five sons (Bill, Ed, Ronald, David and Robert) and Holly is the only daughter. He doesn't look very old in this shot.

I remember Watson very well as we spent many summers up in Waubaushene at the cottage and aboard the "Sea Pig" out in Georgian Bay from the mid seventies to the mid eighties. My generation is very lucky to have not had to go off to war.

The Bear Housewashers

The house at 590 is lovely to look at but on closer inspection you can see it is starting to show its age.  I doubt that Erin's new house has ever been washed before in it's 24 year history and it was showing.

There was unsightly discolouration to the roofing shingles where eavestroughs had been burping out their rotting contents for many years.

We thought the stains were permanent.

The north facing vinyl was covered with green algae or moss.

The green stuff was growing on all the eavetroughs too.

We hired Bear Property Cleaning, a local family owned business to take on the job of cleaning the house.

We watched from the sidewalk as they worked their magic. Good shot of the ravine in the front yard.

At first Wendy was skeptical but as the highly efficient team attacked the problem it became apparent that they were winning the battle.

The chemical solution they applied worked almost immediately. The company does not really "pressure wash" the fragile surfaces but uses a wash formula (we could smell chlorine) and a low pressure rinse around 100 psi. Not much more than city water pressure.

We are very pleased with the end result and at $593.00 (tax incl) for three men and their equipment working for nearly two hours, we feel Bear Property Cleaners offer great value. I certainly would not been able to accomplish what they did. They recommend the treatment every 3 to 5 years.

Kristine Sent A Picture Of Her Grandpa...

"Our family is going to  honour our grandfathers with Remembrance memorial banners that will be hung in Waubaushene.
We have a good photo of Grandpa ( Watson) but it's my Mum's dad who we don't have great photo of.
I am attaching the photo we want to use.
Would you be able to adjust the colour and crop out the man on the right?
I appreciate any help you can give"
Kristine

BEFORE

AFTER

Hi Kristine,
The picture you sent was nice and big, a little grainy, could be clearer but maybe that's how the original is. Should print out 8 x 10 okay. You could try taking the picture again outside in the brighter light but you might get reflections and glare. If this one is okay, let me know. If you have others you need enhanced, I'm here for you. Going into my third year in isolation due to COVID so lots of time on my hands.
Take care,
Tim

New Record For Pool Opening...

In the back yard of Erin's new house there is a lovely deck with an above-ground pool and a hot tub.

The recent warm, sunny weather inspired me to get working on the mechanicals. When we bought this house across the street from us in January the hot tub was sold 'as is' because the previous owner said it stopped working a couple years ago.

Well, it didn't take me long to figure out what was wrong and get it working. I also wanted to know if the salt pool chlorinator, gas heater and pump were working.  A few hours later I had everything open and running.

A day later Erin and Wendy were able to take the first dip in the 38C hot tub. Too cold outside for swimming in the pool but at least we know everything is working as we await the warmer weather. The ladies were in the tub a few times today. Not me! I like a little warmer weather thanks.

Twenty-six Years Since I Sold Carroll Healthcare

Here's a forty year old ad for 'the Carroll System'. Over the 20 years I was involved as a founder, our company developed many new innovations in the geriatric care field.  I used to say it was because we were a small company and more flexible than the big players. In reality much of the newer, simpler features were enabled just because we didn't have the machinery to manufacture the more complicated products. Molding the drawers out of polyethylene, bending the bed frame to receive the head and footboards and later compression molding the bed decks from from thermosets were three examples where I continued to reduce the use of traditional methods and materials for a less labour intensive end result.

One of my home made ad sheets we used to mail to nursing homes.

Our competition hated these new ideas. Big companies like HillRom, Joerns, Metalcraft and more were perfectly contented making a commodity product the same way they had been doing it for decades. Slowly, Carroll Equipment (later Carroll Healthcare) ate away at these companies' captive market, rocking the boat and becoming more than just a minor irritant.

Finally in 1995 I was approached by two different concerns wanting to buy the company. J. P. Chartrand represented the Quebec Teacher's Union. He said he liked what he saw in Carroll Healthcare and made an offer. At nearly the same time, two local London businessmen Don Roussey and Archie Leach approached me and offered more money. We shook hands at lunch at the Carousel Motel on Wellington Rd and the sale was complete.

Cover letter included in mailings and product literature circa 1990: (back when 1 - 5 million was a lot of money)

Carroll Healthcare is a 100 percent Canadian owned London company that designs and manufactures patient room furniture including hospital style beds and casegoods. The products are designed specifically for long term care institutions such as nursing homes and homes for the aged. This specialized furniture is sold all over North America. In the United States, the hospital beds are distributed through Thomasville Furniture Inc. based in North Carolina. Carroll Equipment is 'very flattered that a giant, American company (like Thomasville) would select a Canadian product to distribute in the United States'. Carroll Equipment prides itself on its leadership and competitiveness through innovative features and high quality products. Among other significant features found in their products, the articulating mattress deck of the bed is moulded from a composite material and its design won best of category 'consumer goods' at the Society of Plastics Institute annual convention in Cincinnati in 1994. Carroll Healthcare was the first moulder of this composite formulation in Canada. Products produced include beds (manual and electric), bed side rails, bedside cabinets, dressers and freestanding wardrobe units. The manufacturing division utilizes steel, wood and plastics, mostly processed in-house at the recently expanded Carroll plant in south London.

 Company Details:

Year Established: 1976

Total Sales ($CDN): $1,000,000 - $5,000,000

Number of Employees: 38

The deal closed April 15 1996 and at the ripe old age of 47 my early retirement began after a year or so working with the new owners as a consultant. Of course there's a lot more to the story than disclosed in this post and I'd be happy to bore you with more the next time we meet.

Memories - Nine Years Ago At The River Crab

Hard to believe but it was nearly nine years ago this group met for an all-you-can-eat brunch at the River Crab near St Clair Michigan. Sunday September 1, 2013. Nobody looks hungry so it must be after the feast.

My Family About 37 Years Ago...

It was a time in Wendy and my lives when we were both very busy with the business. We never got around to taking too many pictures so my mother insisted we visit her church and get a family picture taken. This is a rare look at the Carroll family circa 1985.

And here we are again in 2019 ready to go to Doug and Lindsay's wedding

Linda's Home In Grand Bend 2018 - Memories.

A few years ago Linda moved back to London to a beautiful condo. Before that we used to enjoy driving up to see her at her home in Southcott Pines in Grand Bend. Very few people know it but Linda is very close to HRH Queen Elizabeth II or 'Lizzy' as Linda affectionately calls her.

We especially enjoyed visiting Grand Bend when the Queen was there. As you can see Lizzy sometimes enjoyed puttering in Linda's expansive garden. Linda often offered her more suitable clothes for roughing it, but Lizzy preferred to wear her best. Old habits...???

Strangely, the Queen never seemed to try to disguise herself when we went out. I guess people just never thought royalty would just amble in with friends to an Ipperwash Beach restaurant for 'sweet potato fries'. Maybe, if they noticed at all, they thought she only just resembled the Queen.

The above pictures are from the last time (2018) Lizzy sneaked away to visit Linda. Now that Linda has downsized to her condo, there isn't as much room to put her up for a week or two and Her Highness really doesn't feel at ease spending time in the city for fear of being recognized and besides at 95 she's getting up there. Travel becomes almost impossible now. Maybe it's Lizzy's turn to show Linda around over 'ome.

Of course, you will recall, the queen also likes to get together with our friend Pat whenever she's in town:
