The Great Pocket Migration of 2004
I remember the day I moved my wallet from my back pocket to my right front pocket. It was 2004, a memorable year for Wendy and me. We had just finished our first-ever cruise aboard Holland America's brand new ship the Westerdam, sailing through the enchanting Aegean Sea. The adventure didn't end there, though. Our next destination was the heart of Italy, where ancient history and bustling modern life coexist in a way that can only be experienced firsthand.
After disembarking in Venice, we rented a car to start our journey towards Rome. The week was filled with scenic drives, charming Italian towns, and the kind of gelato that makes you question every ice cream you've ever eaten. We turned in our rental car at the airport and decided to take the train from the airport rental office to the bustling downtown Rome station.
As we navigated the crowded station, signs warning us about pickpockets were everywhere. "Watch your belongings!" they screamed, in multiple languages. It was our first hint that we needed to be extra cautious in this city of ancient wonders and modern mischief.
Rome welcomed us with open arms and a cacophony of sounds. We spent three days exploring its treasures, each step taking us deeper into the history and culture that makes Rome so irresistible. From the grandeur of the Coliseum, where echoes of gladiators still seemed to linger, to the serene beauty of the Vatican, where the art and architecture left us in awe, every moment was a feast for the senses.
Trevi Fountain was, of course, a highlight. We tossed coins over our shoulders, ensuring our return to this magical city. We wandered through the ancient halls of the Medici Castle, imagining the lives of those who once walked the same paths. The vibrant outdoor markets and sidewalk cafes were perfect spots to soak up the local atmosphere, indulging in delicious food and people-watching.
Covering these distances on foot we visited the Pantheon, with its majestic dome and a perfect circle of light beaming down from its oculus, reminding us of the passage of time and the brilliance of Roman engineering. We strolled through Piazza Navona, with its beautiful fountains and lively street performers. And we couldn't resist a visit to the Spanish Steps, where we sat and watched the world go by, feeling like characters in our own Italian romance.
That trip to Rome was a defining moment in our travel adventures. It wasn't just about the stunning sights or the delicious food; it was about the little lessons we learned along the way. Moving my wallet might seem like a small change, but it symbolized a broader shift in how we approached our travels—more aware, more prepared, but still eager to embrace the world with open hearts and curious minds.
As we look back on our travels, it's these memories—big and small—that shape the stories of Tim and Wendy's Adventures. Here's to many more journeys, lessons, and, of course, a securely stowed wallet.
Until the next adventure,
Tim
