Every year we look forward to Spring and for the last few years we have been heading out to Longwoods Conservation Area on the first weekend in May. This is the weekend when they stage “the Battle of the Longwoods” re-enactment. We lost this particular battle but if the British hadn’t eventually won, Wendy and I would have been Americans I suppose.

We got there early since Wendy had to get back home by noon to go to “the Mothers’ Day Brunch” at Waverley with Gene, but we had time to walk the Muncey Trail and see some of the Reenactment displays. It’s so nice to smell the bonfires and see the new spring flowers. The weather again cooperated with temperatures in the low seventies on Sunday. Of course, no trip there would be complete without an outdoor breakfast of pancakes and sausage served up by the Optimists. (at the risk of spoiling her appetite for the brunch at 1:30) Our good cruise friends Pete and Donna are reenactors but they don't usually come to this one because the weather can be 'iffy' this time of year.
Modern technology looks out of place here.

The trilliums are also out in the woods along the Rideau Canal system. Carpets of trilliums! I was out to Whitefish Lake with Linda Simpson (formerly Prescott) to the cottage and the buds are starting on the trees, too.
