Our back deck has always been a focal point but it does require some ongoing maintenance.
I can't believe it's been ten years since we added on to it. CLICK HERE to see that far more detailed project back in 2010. We sanded the whole thing down and repainted it at that time. Then in 2015 we repainted it and now it needs it again. You can also CLICK HERE to see the building of the new privacy/shade trellis in the same year 2010.
Our gain! Last week our neighbour Greg dismantled his raised garden boxes. He said last year he couldn't keep ahead of the animals eating everything so was going back to a grass lawn. I thanked him for the 2 x 6 planks and he even delivered them over to our back yard. The nice thing about used planks vs new ones: new planks still contain moisture and oils while old ones are weather beaten and dry. This means you don't have to wait a year before you can paint them.
It wasn't a real lot of work for me to unscrew/un-nail the rotten boards and replace them. Fortunately the under-structure still looks quite sound and that's been in place a long time
because the deck wasn't new when we moved here on May 19, 33 years ago.
Trim the boards and we'll just need some warmer weather and a few gallons of paint and we're good for another 5 or 10 years. CLICK HERE to see the repainting last time in 2015.
